Duke Energy Plans Nuclear Siren Test Wednesday

HUNTERSVILLE, NC -- Duke Energy is conducting a quarterly test of McGuire Nuclear sirens midday Wednesday to make sure they're operating properly.

The Jan. 9 test will begin at 11:50 a.m. and will last about 10 minutes, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Emergency Management Office.

Pole-mounted sirens are located throughout a 10-mile radius of McGuire Nuclear Station, according to Duke Energy. They tested every quarter to ensure they are working correctly as part of normal maintenance. No public action is necessary, officials say.

If you hear sirens but aren't sure if it's just a test, authorities suggest you tune into local radio stations FM 107.9, WLNK Charlotte, FM 106.5, WEND Salisbury, or NOAA Weather Radio, or television stations for instructions on what to do.
