Pot Smoke Leads To Search, 15 Charges For Speeder In Huntersville

Trevon Fears was pulled over for going 30 miles over the speed limit. That turned out to be the least of his legal worries.

HUNTERSVILLE, NC — A lead foot led to handcuffs for a driver in Huntersville Thursday after a traffic stop for speeding led police to the smell of marijuana, a stolen gun and a laundry list of outstanding warrants.

Trevon Fears, 22 and of Charlotte, was pulled over for driving more than 30 miles over the speed limit on Eastfield Road near Independence Hill Road in Huntersville July 12, Huntersville Police Department said.

When approaching Fears’ vehicle, however, the HPD officer smelled pot and conducted a probable cause search. While searching the vehicle, police found a loaded stolen handgun underneath the driver seat.

Facing arrest, Fears attempted to run from the officers as they were in the process of putting him in handcuffs, “but was apprehended after a short struggle,” HPD said.

Following his July 12 arrest, Fears was charged with two counts of assault on a government official, possession of a stolen firearm, felony possession of synthetic cannabinoid, possession with intent to manufacture/sell/deliver Schedule IV controlled substance, possession of marijuana paraphernalia, carrying a concealed weapon, speeding and no operators license.

He was also charged with six active warrants for robbery with a firearm/dangerous weapon, assault with a deadly weapon, first-degree burglary, larceny after breaking and entering, larceny of a motor vehicle, and first-degree kidnapping.
