Transportation Officials Launch Review Of I-77 Contract

The review includes a call for area residents to sound off with their thoughts. What do you think about the I-77 Toll Project?

HUNTERSVILLE, NC -- North Carolina’s transportation department is launching an independent review of the I-77 toll lane contract and project, and is asking for your input.

The Department of Transportation has announced the in-depth, outside review of the private road expansion project will be conducted by Mercator Advisors LLC, an independent consulting firm that specializes in complex capital investments. “Mercator has no previous involvement in the project and has an extensive transportation finance background,” NC DOT said in a statement.

Last month, DOT also pledged to review the construction zone, including the speed limit, after Charlotte media reported accidents were up by 400 in 2016 the work area compared with the year before.

The I-77 toll road project is being built by a private company that will retain the authority to set toll prices without a cap, making the expansion highly contentious with many residents in the Lake Norman region. State transportation officials say the expansion is needed to combat road congestion.

The current project plan includes the construction of two express toll lanes in each direction between Exit 28 in Cornelius and Uptown Charlotte. One express toll lane will be added between Exit 36 in Mooresville and Cornelius.

Mercator’s final report, which is expected to cost $100,000, is expected by Summer 2017.
