• High school softball: Baxter commits to Catawba (salisburypost.com) — Rowan County softball standout Ava Baxter, who has already verbally committed to play at Catawba, has built her reputation partly on big hits against area teams, including a three-run homer versus Mint Hill in Legion play. Her power surge, versatility in the infield, and comfort on Catawba’s field have made the nearby college a natural fit as she plans a nursing career.

• Black nurse allegedly held at gunpoint by off-duty cop (themarysue.com) — A 2018 confrontation in Mint Hill is drawing renewed scrutiny as a former Matthews officer urges Mecklenburg County prosecutors to reconsider charges against an off-duty colleague who allegedly held a Black nurse at gunpoint while she searched for a patient’s home. Mint Hill police documented the encounter as a suspicious-vehicle call, but no one was charged, leaving questions about how the case was handled and whether it meets North Carolina’s kidnapping standard.
