7 Hospitalized In Iredell As County's COVID-19 Count Grows To 240

The number of coronavirus cases in Iredell County is growing. Here's where cases have been confirmed in the past week.

IREDELL COUNTY — The number of confirmed new coronavirus cases in Iredell County increased to 240 Thursday, 37 cases more than were reported a week ago, according to new data released from the Iredell County Health Department.

The areas of the county that have seen the largest increase in confirmed COVID-19 cases this past week have been in central Iredell County, and include zip codes for Statesville, Troutman and Cleveland.

The tally is cumulative and, as of May 28, included an estimated 151 cases that are assumed recovered.

At least 76 Iredell County residents with the new coronavirus, which causes COVID-19, were isolating in their homes as of Thursday.

In the past week the number of patients hospitalized in the county with coronavirus-related illness has increased, too. As of Thursday, seven county residents were hospitalized, up from four reported one week ago.

Six county residents have lost their lives due to COVID-19 since collection of data related to the outbreak began in March.

Iredell County health officials are grouping cases into three regions of the county: North, Central and South. Here's a breakdown of where cases have been confirmed as of 4 p.m. May 28:

North Region (zip codes 27020, 27028, 27055, 28625, 28634, 28636, 28660, 28689 and 28678)

  • 48 cases (up from 38 cases reported May 20)

Central Region (zip codes 27013, 28166, 28677)

  • 88 cases (up from 71 cases reported May 20)

South Region (zip codes 28036, 28115, 28117, 28125)

  • 104 cases (up from 94 cases reported May 20)

Last weekend, a new coronavirus outbreak was confirmed at a second Iredell County nursing home after a resident of the facility and a staff member tested positive for COVID-19, according to county health officials.

"The facility has willingly worked in conjunction with the Iredell County Health Department to have all residents and employees tested for COVID-19 as a precautionary measure," health officials said in a statement.

The two Iredell County facilities currently reporting outbreaks are Autumn Care of Statesville and The Citadel Mooresville.

Health officials consider two or more cases at congregate living facilities, such as a nursing home or jail, to be an outbreak. As of Wednesday, state officials confirmed COVID-19 outbreaks in 84 nursing homes, 35 residential care facilities and 17 correctional facilities.

As of Thursday, North Carolina had confirmed 25,412 cases throughout the state, and 827 deaths. There were also 708 people hospitalized with coronavirus-related illness.
