Coronavirus Cases Increase in Central, North Iredell County

MOORESVILLE, NC — Novel coronavirus continues to spread in Iredell County, with increases reported throughout the county, according to Iredell County Heath Department. The number of confirmed positive cases of novel coronavirus, which causes COVID-19, was at 131 as of Monday afternoon, up by 30 cases since Monday, April 27, according to data released by ICHD May 4.

The updated numbers show increases in north and central Iredell county.

At least six people in Iredell County have died as a result of coronavirus-related illness, ICHD said.

The tally is cumulative and includes at least 72 cases that are assumed recovered, according to county health data. In reviewing all the cases, the age group hardest hit is that of county residents between 25 and 49 years of age.

"Reporting the number of cases that appear to have recovered is a complicated process," ICHD said in a recent statement. "Some infected people will have mild symptoms and others find themselves with more severe symptoms. People have varying experiences on how the virus runs its course, making reporting the number of those who have appeared to have recovered a complicated process, adding, "Full-recovery' looks different for everyone and cannot truly be defined or measured at this time."

At least four Iredell County residents were hospitalized for coronavirus-related illness, as of Monday afternoon.

Statewide, COVID-19 cases continue to rise. As of Monday morning, at least 11,848 people in North Carolina had tested positive for COVID-19, and 430 had died from coronavirus-related illness, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services said.

The number of outbreaks confirmed in congregate living facilities in the state, such as nursing homes and residential care facilities, continues to rise as deaths reported in these facilities claim at least half of the state's death toll.

One such outbreak was reported recently at an Iredell County nursing home. State officials identified the facility as the Autumn Care nursing home in Statesville, which is one of 56 nursing homes and 23 residential care facilities in the state reporting an outbreak of the new coronavirus, which causes COVID-19, NC DHHS said. As of May 1, the confirmed cases at the Statesville nursing home included two staff members and a resident, and no deaths had been reported.

Iredell County health officials are grouping cases into three regions of the county: North, Central and South. Here's a breakdown of where cases are emerging as of 4 p.m. May 4, according to the Iredell County Department of Health:

North Region (zip codes 27020, 27028, 27055, 28625, 28634, 28636, 28660, 28689 ad 28678)

• 21 cases (up 10 cases since April 29)

Central Region (zip codes 27013, 28166, 28677)

• 44 cases (up 11 cases since April 29)

South Region (zip codes 28036, 28115, 28117, 28125)

• 66 cases (up two cases since April 29)

According to county health data, those in the age group of 50 to 64 years of age represent 32 percent of all Iredell cases, followed by those 25 to 49 years of age with 35 percent of the cases and 18 to 24 years of age with 13 percent of cases. Those 65 and older make up 18 percent of COVID-19 cases in Iredell County.

At least one person infected with COVID-19 in Iredell County is under age of 17.
