COVID-19 Spread Continues In Iredell, New Cases Confirmed

More than a dozen children in Iredell County have been infected with coronavirus, according to county health data.

IREDELL COUNTY — The number of confirmed new coronavirus cases in Iredell County increased to 284 as of Wednesday evening, reflecting an increase of 16 known cases in the county since Sunday, according to new data released from the Iredell County Health Department.

About 5 percent of the county's confirmed cases, or at least 14, were of confirmed infections of children under 17 years old, ICHD data indicated. Most of the cases — about 41 percent — were of residents who were 25 to 49 years old.

The area of the county that has seen the largest increase in the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in recent days is in north Iredell County, and includes zip codes for Harmony and Union Grove.

The 284 COVID-19 case tally is cumulative and, as of June 3, included an estimated 190 cases that are assumed recovered, according to the health department.

At least 84 Iredell County residents with the new coronavirus, which causes COVID-19, were isolating in their homes as of Wednesday.

In the past week the number of patients hospitalized in the county with coronavirus-related illness has seen a decrease, according to health department data. As of Wednesday afternoon, four county residents were hospitalized, down from seven hospitalizations reported late last week.

Six county residents have lost their lives due to COVID-19 since collection of data related to the outbreak began in March.

Iredell County health officials are grouping cases into three regions of the county: North, Central and South. Here's a breakdown of where cases have been confirmed as of 4 p.m. June 3:

North Region (zip codes 27020, 27028, 27055, 28625, 28634, 28636, 28660, 28689 and 28678)

  • 57 cases (up from 48 cases reported May 28)

Central Region (zip codes 27013, 28166, 28677)

  • 105 cases (up from 88 cases reported May 28)

South Region (zip codes 28036, 28115, 28117, 28125)

  • 122 cases (up from 104 cases reported May 28)

The county's COVID-19 count includes confirmed outbreaks at nursing homes in Statesville and Mooresville. As of June 2, Autumn Care of Statesville reported three staff members and one resident had tested positive for the virus, as well as one staff member and one resident of The Citadel in Mooresville.

Health officials consider two or more cases at congregate living facilities, such as a nursing home or jail, to be an outbreak. As of Wednesday, state public health officials confirmed COVID-19 outbreaks in 92 nursing homes, 45 residential care facilities and 19 correctional facilities.

North Carolina labs confirmed 888 cases of COVID-19 Wednesday, increasing the state's total number to nearly 31,000. There were 18 coronavirus-related deaths reported in North Carolina since Tuesday, pushing the death toll to 939, NC Department of Health and Human Services said.
