Off-Duty Deputy Robbed Rockwell Bank: Davidson County Sheriff

An off-duty Davidson County deputy accused of robbing a bank before his shift began has been fired, sheriff says.

ROCKWELL, NC — Police in Rockwell, North Carolina, made an unusual arrest Tuesday afternoon — a fellow law enforcement officer now accused of bank robbery. Off-duty Davidson County Deputy Jeff Athey reportedly committed the crime before his shift was to begin later in the day, according to multiple media reports.

Athey was arrested around 4 p.m., about five minutes after someone at the F&M Bank made a 911 call about the robbery. He surrendered peacefully without resisting and was promptly fired, his former boss, Davidson County Sheriff David Grice told WSOC-TV.

No one was injured in the robbery, and an undisclosed amount of money was recovered, Grice said.

The sheriff told the television station that Athey hadn’t shown any behavior that would indicate he might rob a bank.

Investigators have released few details about the robbery, WBTV reported. Anyone with information is asked to call the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office or the Rockwell Police Department, which are investigating.
