MOORESVILLE, NC — Republican Ted Budd has been re-elected, keeping his seat for North Carolina’s 13th congressional district in one of the tightest races of the evening in the Tar Heel State. On a national level, Democrats needed to flip 23 Republican-held seats on election night in order to take control of the U.S. House, and two of the most competitive races were in North Carolina, according to the New York Times.

One of those seats was in North Carolina’s 13th district. Rep. Ted Budd, a freshman in Congress, was targeted by Democrats and faced stiff opposition from Democrat Kathy Manning, an attorney from Greensboro.

Both Budd and Manning received their share of public support from political heavyweights leading into the election. At a recent rally, President Trump touted Budd, saying he is “a champion for the people of this state.”
