Netflix, Stolen Firestick Lead Detectives To Accused Thief’s Door

Authorities traced the IP address after the burglary victim realized his his stolen Firestick and Netflix account was being used.

IREDELL COUNTY, NC — A Netflix-watching accused thief using a stolen Amazon Firestick wasn’t hard to find, say Iredell County authorities who showed up on his doorstep after tracing the internet protocol address.

On Nov. 28, 2018, two guns and an Amazon Firestick were among items reported stolen during a break-in of a home on Ashbrook Road in Statesville.

“The victim soon noticed the Firestick was being used to access his Netflix account, as programs were displayed which the victim had not viewed,” Iredell County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

Investigators were able to acquire from Netflix and Amazon the IP address used by the suspect to access and view programs, then obtained a search warrant for the IP provider to get the identification of the account holder.

“While waiting for the search warrant results, Jakob Treston Parsons was developed as a suspect in this incident by a second report from the victim’s neighbor, who returned home to find him on the property,” ICSO said.

The search warrant results from the IP provider confirmed that the stolen Firestick was used at Parson’s home in Iredell County, ICSO said.

On Jan. 28, a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Parsons, 19, was charged with felony breaking and entering a building, felony larceny after breaking and entering and felony larceny of a firearm.
