Prison On Lockdown After Brawl Sends 4 To Hospital

A fight that broke out between inmates at Piedmont Correctional Institution sent four prisoners to the hospital, according to officials.

SALISBURY, NC — A Charlotte-area prison was put on lockdown Monday afternoon after four inmates were assaulted and had to be hospitalized after a prison yard brawl, according to prison officials.

The incident occurred around 2:15 p.m. at the Piedmont Correctional Institution is located at 1245 Camp Road in Salisbury.

“Four offenders were transported to outside medical with non-life threatening injuries and several others were treated at the facility,” said the North Carolina Department of Public Safety in a statement following the incident.

“The facility is currently in lockdown. Outside law enforcement was called in and is working with DPS staff on the investigation,” it said.

This incident comes in the wake of a report that three gang members attacked another inmate in March, punching, kicking and stabbing the victim under his left eye, the Salisbury Post reported.
