In North Carolina, 3 beers were listed among Americaβs best. Here they are:
- Wicked Weed Red Angel β Asheville, N.C.
- ABV: 7 percent
- Category: Sour Ale
- βAged in red wine barrels and soaked in raspberries, Wicked Weedβs sour beer Red Angel earns its name well. With a bold dried fruit flavor that matches its vibrant color, this beer is perfect for the hesitant beer drinker,β said The Daily Meal.
- Olde Hickory Brewery The Event Horizon β Hickory, N.C.
- ABV: 8.5 percent
- Category: Stout
- βThe Event Horizon is brewed with honey and aged in oak bourbon barrels. The imperial stout β released each year during the late fall or early winter β has an outstanding flavor profile of honey, fudge, and particularly strong bourbon. But donβt expect to chug this one because itβs incredibly thick. This brew will coat your mouth with every sip and leave a pleasant sweet vanilla aftertaste dancing on your tongue.β
- The Duck-Rabbit Craft Brewery Baltic Porter β Farmville, N.C.
- ABV: 9 percent
- Category: Baltic Porter
- βDuck-Rabbitβs Baltic Porter smells like roasted malt with a touch of fruit. It tastes just the same, but slightly sweeter with nutty undertones and a surprise short-lived burst of cocoa. Itβs creamy, softly carbonated, and roasty without tasting burnt. While we donβt encourage smoking, some say this medium-bodied beer complements the occasional cigar, but itβs special enough to enjoy without the tobacco."
If youβre into the beer you might recognize some of the more popular or highly rated brews on the list, including Russian River Pliny the Elder β and Younger, of course β Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA, Allagash White, Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout and The Alchemist Heady Topper.

Overall, beer sales volume was down 1.2 percent in 2017, according to the Brewers Association.
But craft beer sales jumped 5 percent and accounted for 12.7 percent of the overall beer market. In North Carolina, there are 257 craft breweries, the group found.
Good brewers and ingredients are essential to any great beer. But other factors β including something as small as the tap used to pour the beverage and the glassware used to drink it β also play a role.To figure out which beers are Americaβs best, the authors cross-referenced beer ratings on the app Untappd and the sites BeerAdvocate and RateBeer. The site looked for beers that got the highest marks from both average joes β including your tatted up, bearded friend β and beer-tasting professionals. The authors also used their own βextensive tasting experience and knowledge,β giving preference to the best beers the siteβs editors have had in the last year.
The Daily Meal also gave special consideration to states with a smaller number of brewers, including North Dakota and New Mexico.
βThus, nearly every state in the union is represented on our list of the 101 best beers in America,β the authors wrote.
The beers are not ranked in any particular order, noting that itβs βfrankly impossibleβ to compare one style against another.
So donβt worry, you can still debate which is actually the best. And Patch encourages you to do so. Head over to our Facebook page and let us know: Do you agree with the beers on this list? What's the best beer in North Carolina?
