WWII Fly-In: How To Take A Flight On Vintage Plane In Iredell

The Wings of Freedom Tour is landing at Statesville Airport Wednesday. Here's how to see, and even get a seat, on a vintage WWII bomber.

MOORESVILLE, NC — If you spot World War II-era bombers in the sky tomorrow, don’t panic. We’re not under attack. The Wings of Freedom Tour, which features WWII bombers and fighter aircraft, is landing at Statesville Airport Wednesday.

The three-day event highlights restored vintage B-17 Flying Fortress, B-24 Liberator and B-25 Mitchell and P-51 Mustang aircraft for tours, as well as flights.

The Wings of Freedom Tour runs Wednesday, Oct. 24 through Friday, Oct. 26, at the Statesville Airport, located at 238 Airport Road.

No reservations are required for the walk through tours, which are $15 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. Tour hours are as follows:

  • Wednesday, Oct. 24 — 2 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, Oct. 25 — 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
  • Friday, Oct. 26 — 9 a.m. - noon

  • 30-minute flight on the B-17 or B-24 is $450 per person
  • 30-minute flight on the B-25 is $400 per person
  • 30-minute flight training on the P-51 is $2200
  • 60-minute flight training on the P-51 is $3200
