Today's riddle: What has a neck but no head? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Can Raleigh make downtown's Moore Square a family-friendly destination? (newsobserver.com) — Downtown leaders are pushing to turn Moore Square into a safer, more family-friendly hub, tying it to Marbles Kids Museum, state museums and Dix Park via a repurposed GoRaleigh route. With crime concerns around the transit center and a failed affordable housing project, they're urging city officials, businesses and residents to rally around redevelopment, added play spaces and public art.
2. Raleigh curfew watch: Police chief points to drop in juvenile crime in other cities (wral.com) — Raleigh leaders are weighing a proposed youth curfew after violent Fourth of July gatherings, and they're looking closely at results from similar rules in Nashville, Fayetteville and Winston-Salem. Police Chief Rico Boyce has drafted an ordinance, and Councilman Corey Branch says he'd support it, urging residents to share their views at City Council meetings on Sept. 8 and 15.
3. Al's French Fries ends nearly 70-year run at NC State Fair (abc11.com) — Raleigh fairgoers will notice a big change this year: Al's French Fries is leaving the NC State Fair after nearly 70 years, citing a new vendor fee structure that takes 15% of sales. Fair officials say the shift follows national trends, while other vendors like Angel Sweets prepare to return and hope locals keep supporting small businesses.
4. Raleigh doctor flies to Nepal to find parents who went missing right when devastating floods hit (cbs17.com) — A Raleigh doctor has flown from RDU to Nepal to search for her parents, who went missing near the China-Nepal border after catastrophic floods that killed hundreds and left thousands unaccounted for. She hopes to work with embassies and hospitals in Kathmandu while dangerous conditions keep families like hers from reaching the disaster zone directly.
5. FCC Authorizes Wireless Technology Innovation Zone at Iowa State (benton.org) — Raleigh readers should know that the FCC has expanded the geographic boundaries of North Carolina State University's wireless Innovation Zone, potentially boosting local research capacity. The same decision also creates a new zone at Iowa State and enlarges test areas in Boston and Salt Lake City to advance next-generation rural connectivity and precision agriculture technologies.
