1. What's next for ILM? Airport gets $6.3 million for runway extension (wect.com) — Wilmington International Airport is getting $6.3 million in federal funding to extend a runway, plus another $3.7 million to expand its terminal access road. The grants are part of a nationwide FAA improvement program. Local travelers can expect long-term safety and capacity upgrades as ILM modernizes its infrastructure with this investment.
2. Greenville Loop Trail Takes Shape in Wilmington (wwaytv3.com) — Construction of Wilmington's 4.4-mile Greenville Loop Trail is moving ahead, with the first phase finished and later phases scheduled through 2027. The multi-use path will link neighborhoods to schools, shopping, UNCW and other trails, giving walkers and cyclists safer, more direct routes across town and toward Wrightsville Beach.
3. 90-year-old woman reunites with Wilmington officer who stopped nearly $10,000 crypto scam (wect.com) — A Wilmington police officer stopped a Porters Neck woman from losing nearly $10,000 to a bitcoin-based scam, intervening at a gas station kiosk just in time. The officer then helped her verify her accounts, redeposit the cash, and later reunited with her weeks afterward. Police are using the incident to warn residents never to send crypto at a stranger's direction.
4. 'Delivery is imminent': UNCW awaits new research vessel (coastalreview.org) — UNCW is about to receive its new R/V Osprey research vessel in Wilmington, promising major boosts to marine science, student training, and PFAS monitoring in the Cape Fear region. The state-funded catamaran will support offshore sand surveys, water-quality studies, and collaborations with coastal labs. Local researchers say its advanced gear and larger size will transform their work.
5. Wilmington Sharks Head Coach Russ Burroughs named CPL Coach of the Year (wwaytv3.com) — Wilmington Sharks head coach Russ Burroughs has been named Coastal Plain League Coach of the Year after guiding the team to its second title in three seasons. The longtime manager, who calls Wilmington his permanent home, has led the Sharks to three straight playoff appearances and cemented the franchise as one of the league's most consistent contenders.
