1. One Wilmington restaurant closes as new burger restaurant on the way (starnewsonline.com subscription) — Wilmington's Cargo District is seeing a big change as hot chicken spot Birdbox closes and Fork n Cork owner Dustin Smith prepares to open Burger Street in the same shipping-container space. The new restaurant will honor his family's Patty Wagon burger legacy in downtown Wilmington with smash burgers, dogs, brats, and classic sides while the former owners plan their next move.
2. Wesley Memorial UMC presents 37th annual pumpkin patch (wwaytv3.com) — Families in Wilmington can mark their calendars for Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church's 37th annual Pumpkin Patch, running Sept. 26 through Oct. 31 at College Road and Oleander Drive. With affordable pumpkins, gourds, merchandise, and free story times and scavenger hunts for kids' groups, the long-time local tradition raises funds for the church's youth and mission work.
3. Wilmington council votes to oppose aspects of Cape Fear Memorial Bridge replacement plan (wect.com) — Wilmington residents should know that City Council has formally urged NCDOT to drop both the 135-foot fixed bridge design that would funnel heavy traffic onto Fifth Avenue and any tolling option for the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge replacement. The city's resolution, submitted during NCDOT's public comment period through Oct. 15, pushes for more study of environmental and historic impacts while keeping crucial grant funding on track.
4. Heat advisory affecting Southeast Coast Friday (heraldsun.com) — Residents in Wilmington and coastal New Hanover County should prepare for a heat advisory Friday, with heat index values expected to reach up to 108 degrees between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. The National Weather Service in Wilmington urges people to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity, check on vulnerable neighbors, and never leave children or pets in vehicles.
5. Wilmington chefs take top honors at 2026 NCRLA Chef Showdown (wwaytv3.com) — Wilmington food lovers can celebrate as local pastry chef Charmaine Devine of Sugo Italian Steakhouse was named 2026 NCRLA Pastry Chef of the Year and won the People's Choice dessert award. Another area chef, Makala Beaver of King Neptune in Wrightsville Beach, was honored for best use of dairy, spotlighting the region's growing reputation in North Carolina's culinary scene.
