Here are the top three stories in Winston-Salem today:
- Eric Williams of Winston-Salem is one of four Americans who were kidnapped in Matamoros, Mexico by a Mexican drug cartel. Williams was reportedly shot in the leg and is currently being treated in Brownsville, Texas. The Scorpions faction of the Gulf cartel has turned over its members who allegedly kidnapped the four Americans to law enforcement. The cartel also apologized to the women in Matamoros who died in the shooting during the kidnapping and the families of the four Americans kidnapped, two of whom died. (WXII12 Winston-Salem)
- The manager of a local Harris Teeter helped save a woman who was having a seizure in the store. Amber Laudicina experiences unexpected seizures due to chemotherapy-related brain damage she sustained while treating a brain tumor in 2010. The life-threatening situation was captured on camera and Laudicina said she is grateful for both Coda, her 11-month-old service dog, and the manager. Harris Teeter plans to honor the employee sometime next week and Laudicina set up a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for the employee out of appreciation. (Fox 8)
- Winston-Salem Police Chief William H. Penn Jr. created a new community engagement committee for community members who would like to help the police department build a safer community. The committee will "act as a conduit of information" between the community and the police department. Chief Penn said, "We want the council to help us create a safer city by building strong, positive and trusting relationships between the community and the Winston-Salem Police Department."
