Heritage Avon Lake hosts Lake Shore Cemetery tours

Heritage Avon Lake presents its third annual tour of Avon Lake's historic Lake Shore cemetery with all new stories of early settlers.

Farmers. Doctors. Teachers. Mothers. Fathers. Sisters. Brothers. Cousins. All are among the more than 200 individuals buried in Avon Lake’s Lake Shore Cemetery off Lake Road on the shores of Lake Erie, and all have a story to tell. Local author and historian Sherry Spenzer will share some of their stories at the third annual “Bones Beneath the Stones” cemetery tour presented by Heritage Avon Lake.

Tours will take place Thursday, Oct. 19, Friday, Oct. 20, and Saturday, Oct. 21, at 4:30 p.m., 5:45 p.m., and 7 p.m. each night and begin at The Folger Home, 32770 Lake Rd, before proceeding with a guide to the cemetery. The 5:45 p.m. tours will be virtual, through a slide presentation narrated by Spenzer, and take place inside the Folger Home. All tours will be followed with light refreshments.

Spenzer will present all new stories about some of the early settlers of Avon Lake and surrounding areas.

“Not only is this great seasonal fun, it’s an opportunity to learn some local history from an entirely different perspective,” Spenzer said.

Some of the notable individuals buried in Lake Shore cemetery include Joseph Moore, Revolutionary War soldier and friend of George Washington; Malinda C. (Titus) Beard, granddaughter of early Avon Lake settler Anson Titus and known for her extremely long hair; Dr. John Pipes, a prominent physician in this area for many years; and Edmund Tower, who died in 1822, making his one of the earliest burials in the cemetery.
