1. Berea resident loses $172,000 in scam involving fake PayPal rep and gold bars (cleveland.com) — A Berea resident on Sheldon Road was scammed out of $172,000 after fraudsters posing as PayPal representatives convinced him to buy gold bars and later ship cash, including funds withdrawn from a Chase Bank account in Berea. Police say the victim followed elaborate instructions involving a Mansfield-area gold dealer, a courier meetup at the North Rocky River Drive BP, and mailing money to Los Angeles before the scammers disappeared. 
2. Berea neighborhood becomes a certified historic district (cleveland.com) — A Berea neighborhood between Seminary and Beech Streets has just been federally recognized as the Berea Village Founders Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places, capping decades of local preservation work. Residents and the Century Home Garden District Owners Association spent years researching all 58 homes, building on efforts that began with Save Old Berea in the 1970s. Watch for upcoming placards and a likely celebration ceremony.
3. Cuyahoga County grants support road improvements, senior center upgrades (cleveland.com) — Berea is set to receive $200,000 from Cuyahoga County for the Thacker Street Road Reconstruction Project, part of a $1.46 million competitive grant package. The program funds high-priority road work and senior center upgrades in eight communities, aiming to speed up critical local projects. Additional community grant awards are expected later this year.
4. Dream home, nightmare reality. Homeowner could lose lake access because of property line mix-up (news5cleveland.com) — A Berea homeowner overlooking Wallace Lake may lose the backyard steps that give him cherished lake access after Metroparks surveyors ruled part of his staircase encroaches on Mill Stream Run Reservation land. He’s been ordered to remove the structures by August 15, though Metroparks say they’ll work on a reasonable timeline. The homeowner hopes for a compromise that preserves his access down the steep hillside.
5. Browns DT Maliek Collins starting training camp on Active/PUP list (news5cleveland.com) — In Berea, Browns defensive tackle Maliek Collins is starting training camp on the active/physically unable to perform list as he continues rehabbing last season’s quad surgery. He’ll count toward the 90-man roster and can attend meetings but can’t practice until medically cleared. Other defensive tackles, including Mason Graham and Mike Hall Jr., will get extra reps while he recovers.
