Cleveland City Council Implores Giant Eagle to Not Close 2 Stores

The two stores employ 120 people. Council asked the grocery chain to work with the City of Cleveland to keep the stores open.

CLEVELAND, OH - Cleveland City Council passed a resolution yesterday imploring Giant Eagle to reconsider its decision to close two grocery stores and a Get-Go gas station in the city. The resolution asks Giant Eagle to work with the city to keep the stores open.

The Pittsburgh-based grocery chain announced Jan. 4 that it would be closing the stores. The store on 11501 Buckeye Road and the GetGo on 2780 E 116th Street will close on February 4. Then the store at 13820 Lorain Avenue will close on March 4. The store's pharmacies will close Jan. 14, the company says the early shut-down will ensure that all prescriptions are successfully transferred.

"The sudden closings of pharmacies in mid-January leaves little time for customers to transfer prescriptions, placing hardships, especially on our seniors and those with disabilities,” said Council President Kevin Kelley.

In a press release announcing the closures, a spokesperson for Giant Eagle said that the decision to close the stores was a difficult one.

“Northeast Ohio, and Cleveland specifically, are important communities for Giant Eagle, and we remain committed to supporting customers throughout the region for years to come," said Dan Donovan, Giant Eagle spokesperson, in a press release.

“We thank our customers for their years of patronage at these locations, and invite them to visit us at our other Cleveland supermarkets including our West 117th Street and Edgecliff Avenue Giant Eagle stores” said Donovan.
