Cleveland Indians Lose Game 2 of World Series to Chicago Cubs

Cubs starter Jake Arrieta threw a masterful 5.2 innings, and the Cubs scored a 5-1 victory.

CLEVELAND, OH — Game 2 of the World Series goes to the Chicago Cubs. The boys from Wrigley Field rode a hot start from pitcher Jake Arrieta to a 5-1 victory and evened the World Series at one game apiece. The action will shift to the Windy City with Game 3 slated for Friday.

Arrieta went 5-2/3 innings and struck out six before getting pulled. He was no-hitting the Tribe into the fifth inning. The Cubs then got two scoreless innings from reliever Mike Montgomery before handing the ball over to one of the best closers in baseball, Aroldis Chapman. Chapman slammed the door in the eighth and ninth innings and sealed Chicago's victory.

For the other dugout, Indians starter Trevor Bauer made it only 3-2/3 innings before getting pulled. The Cubs were able to get six hits and two earned runs from the returning Bauer, who got pulled from his last start against the Toronto Blue Jays when a wound on his pinkie finger opened up and he began bleeding on the mound.

This time there was no freak injury that derailed Bauer, just strong hitting performances that forced Indians manager Terry Francona to turn to his bullpen early. The team turned the ball over to Zach McAllister, who surrendered one hit and two runs after getting only two outs.

After that, Francona was forced to go to four other relievers: Brian Shaw, returning Danny Salazar, Jeff Manship and Dan Otero. Salazar hadn't pitched in a game since Sept. 9.

While the Tribe has been enjoying a run of solid outings from its bullpen, there was no appearance from the shutdown Andrew Miller or closer Cody Allen Wednesday night. Once the team surrendered the lead to the Cubs, Chicago never looked back.

For the Cubs, first basemen Anthony Rizzo snapped his postseason slump and smacked one hit and drew two walks and registered one RBI. He wasn't the only Cub to manage multiple on-base attempts against a staggered Indians pitching staff. Designated hitter Kyle Schwarber continued his hot streak by collecting two hits and two RBIs, and left fielder Ben Zobrist got two hits and a RBI of his own.

Game 3 of the series will be played Oct. 28 at 8:08 p.m. EST at Wrigley Field.
