New Census Data Shows 30 Percent Poverty Rate in 17 Cities in Ohio
Child poverty above 50 percent in some areas.

(Originally posted on Dec. 27, 2016) CLEVELAND, OH — New data released by the U.S. Census Bureau shows nearly a third of residents in 17 Ohio cities are living in poverty. The figures may be deceiving, Cleveland.com reported, because the highest poverty rates are in two college towns — Athens (56.9 percent) and Oxford (47 percent).
But other high poverty rates aren't similarly explained. East Cleveland has a 42.6 percent poverty rate, and Youngstown has a 38.3 percent poverty rate. In those cities, 63.5 percent and 60.6 percent of children live in poverty, respectively. Warren, Fostoria and Cleveland also had high rates of children in poverty at 56.7 percent, 54.4 percent and 53.2 percent, respectively.
Poverty is almost non-existent in the Columbus suburb of Powell (0.9 percent) and the Cincinnati suburb of Indian Hill (1.2 percent).
