WalletHub looked at two main categories when creating their study, “Educational Attainment” and “Quality of Education & Attainment Gap.” To determine the educational attainment portion, the company's researchers looked at the share of a state's population who a high school level education, who had some college experience, who had attained a Bachelor's Degree, and who had attained a graduate level or professional degree.

To determine Quality of Education and Attainment Gap, they measured the quality of the state's school systems using US News World & Report rankings. They also looked at the quality of the state's universities, the public school and college graduation rates, and racial and gender gaps in attainment.
