2,482 Ohioans sign up for energy program and donate lights to those without electricity

Ohio customer participation high

2,482 Ohioans have signed up for a Direct Energy electricity and natural gas plan that both provided them an inflatable solar Luci light and donated one on their behalf to people who live without electricity. The 2,482 Give Brighter Ohio customers are nearly equal to the total number of Give Brighter customers in New York, Illinois and Michigan combined.

The donated lights are going to non-governmental organizations serving people in countries including Haiti, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Kenya, Rwanda, Malawi, South Sudan, Nigeria, Columbia, Uganda and Ghana.

Recent reports have indicated that a growing number of consumers are integrating causes they care about into their daily routines and purchase behaviors. As a result, they are more likely to buy items associated with a cause.

Created by MPOWERD, Luci lights use solar power and can brighten a room for up to 18 hours after charging in the sun for 8 hours. MPOWERD works with non-profit community partners to distribute the lights to people in need. The lights enable people to continue their day past sunset, so children can study, entrepreneurs can keep working, and health clinics can stay open.
