Today's riddle: What is clean when it is black and dirty when it is white? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Northeast Ohio Flock fight reaches Congress (axios.com) — Cleveland Heights residents are at the center of a growing fight over Flock license plate readers, with local records showing more than 132,000 searches by 134 agencies in just two months despite new city guardrails. A grassroots group, Cleveland Heights for Immigrant Rights, is urging the city to cancel its contract, while Rep. Shontel Brown presses the FBI and Congress weighs broader limits on ALPR use across Northeast Ohio.
2. Cleveland Heights ADU proposal would add size, setback and approval limits (cleveland.com) — Cleveland Heights is weighing new rules that would let homeowners add accessory dwelling units, but with tighter limits on size, setbacks, and required approvals. A public hearing at City Hall on Oct. 15 will shape whether ADUs become a conditional use, how big they can be on smaller lots, and what owner-occupancy and lot-coverage rules will apply in your neighborhood.
3. CH-UH projects general-fund balance will turn negative by 2030 as voters weigh 6.5-mill levy (cleveland.com) — Cleveland Heights-University Heights schools project their general fund could fall from about $32 million in 2027 to a negative balance by 2030 without new revenue. As voters consider Issue 4, a 6.5-mill operating levy estimated to raise $11.1 million annually, district leaders are also cutting at least $5 million in expenses, including staff reductions already underway.
4. Cleveland Heights-University Heights schools seek first levy in 6 years to fund operations (cleveland19.com) — Cleveland Heights-University Heights schools are asking voters this November to approve a new operating levy that would cost about $228 a year per $100,000 of home value. District leaders say the continuous levy would fund classroom instruction, transportation, and utilities for nearly 5,000 students, while some residents argue the investment is worthwhile to maintain strong programs and opportunities.
