Updated: Beachwood, Downtown Residents Report Feeling Virginia Earthquake

Beachwood Police tweet about quake; few felt it in Cleveland Heights

A 5.9-magnitude earthquake was felt as far north as Toronto and in many places around Cleveland, residents report.

Beachwood residents called police to report that they felt buildings shake during the earthquake that occurred in Virginia this afternoon.

No injuries or damage has been reported locally. BeachwoodΒ Police Chief Mark Sechrist said that they are aware that residents felt shaking and that some cell phone reception has been affected.

The United States Geological Survey reports that the earthquake occurred at 1:51 p.m. People have reported on Twitter and other news agencies that they felt the quake as far north as Toronto.

In this region, Crains Cleveland Business News and The Plain Dealer tweeted that tall downtown buildings swayed and employees evacuated, and the hashtag #CLEquake is spreading among users talking about the incident.

"Plain Dealer building in downtown Cleveland was swaying noticeably in the earthquake today #earthquake," the newspaper wrote on Twitter.Β 

Another Twitter user said he felt it at Key Tower downtown.

"The building shook a bit and the window blinds rattled enough to catch your attention. I thought it was a wind storm," @DazzlngUrbanite wrote.Β 

Another woman said her building downtown was evacuated for about 10 minutes.Β 

"We debated if we should evacuate and then heard the ceiling and windows creaking so we grabbed our stuff and jogged out of the building," @LifeLoveCake said via a direct message on Twitter. "This earthquake was definitely more noticeable than last year … Once outside we saw all nearby buildings were evacuating as well. It was something felt by many, that's for sure."Β 

Cleveland Heights Police said they received two calls about the quake, but not from residents in the city. One call came from Shaker Heights and another from near East 55th Street, the police dispatch reported.

@Floy_81 wrote on Twitter that she felt it near Coventry in Cleveland Heights.

"I was sitting on my bed, and I felt a shake shake shake. I thought about it but then I was like naaaahhh it couldn't be," she wrote.Β 

Sheryl Banks, marketing and community relations manager for the Cleveland Heights-University Heights Public Library, said employees did not feel the quake there. Jeff Hirst wrote on Cleveland Heights Patch's Facebook page that he didn't feel it in the Cedar Lee Business District, either.Β 

But just down the street, Holly Hazelwood said she felt it at the Cleveland Clinic.Β 

, near the epicenter of the quake, reported that "the tremors sent people scurrying into the streets here near the home offices of Fredericksburg Patch on Forbes Street."
