Neighbors Nurture Mother Nature

Turning a dead tree branch into something beautiful

This is a little idea that came to me when I realized my next door neighbor and I shared something in common — that old tree planted on her property. Due to unforeseen growth, it expanded over into our yard and with the potential to fall on my garage. So she had one trunk cut, leaving an unsightly stump.

My neighbor and I used that old tree trunk that had been subjected to the fierceness of mother nature, rather than complain about it’s ugliness. We decided to make it beautiful, and to nurture it. We lined the trunk with potting mix, and took perennials from our gardens, and purchased colorful annuals of our own choice to create the “Friendship Bouquet.” We fertilize, we pinch spent blooms and water it. We take turns giving this project neighborly love. We have constant conversations about this bouquet that have led us to talk about other ways we can help each other, and encourage other neighbors to nurture Mother Nature.

We have taken pictures of the Friendship Bouquet to share with our guests when we entertain, and sometimes when people pass by, we receive compliments. This project has proven to be a very special expression of friendship and love!
