This is a neighborhood idea that was inspired as a result of me taking care of my neighbor's property while she unfortuanately had to leave town due to a family tragedy. I knew she would be sad when she came home. I couldn't reduce the pain. I couldn't offer her relief. There was one thing I knew that brought joy to her in the past and that was gardening. To her surprise when she arrived home she discovered a newly planted garden, with plants she once expressed to me were her favorites. My family donated a park bench too.
My neighbor at that time (about 19 years ago), lived alone. I am the mother of three boys that helped her out cutting the grass, shoveling snow and occasionally taking groceries from her car to her kitchen.
They would occasionally check in with her to see if she needed any chores taken care of that would be hard for a lady. They would make sure that the cat was in the house and that the doors were locked for her safety.

We continued to check in on our neighbors. We alert each other when we leave town, especially for long periods of time. At times we would cut the lawn, or shovel snow, receive packages, if given permission.
We try very hard to keep trash off of lawns and tree lawns where there are empty homes.

If we live next door where a family moved out of the home, for whatever reason, we would watch the property closely for squatters, and keep the police informed about any suspicious activity. If the grass was left unattended too long, a neighbor usually volunteers to give it a fresh cut.
A neighborhood is being neighborly with your neighbors! Have a great day.
