Carjacking At Cleveland Heights Community Center

Police officials said it's common to see an uptick in crime during the holiday season, so police patrols near the facility will be increased

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OH β€” A man was carjacked while leaving the Cleveland Heights Community Center on Monday night. Two men, one with a handgun, accosted the man and took his vehicle.

Cleveland Heights Police Chief Annette Mecklenburg said the incident happened at 7 p.m. The man had just gotten into his car when the two suspects approached him, brandished a handgun, and demanded the man's keys.

"The victim did the right thing and let the males take his car. Thankfully, no one was injured during this incident," Mecklenburg said in a statement.

Sadly, police believe this could be part of an uptick in crime that is common during the holiday season. Due to this incident and the increased likelihood of criminal activity, police presence at the Community Center will be increased.

Mecklenburg assured residents that police will remain vigilant in ensuring the safety and protection of residents and visitors. However, she also issued some common-sense safety tips to remember.

"As a reminder, you should always be aware of your surroundings; park in well-lit lots and have your keys out in advance. If you see anyone suspicious near your car or lingering around a parking lot, please give the Police Department a call and let us respond to investigate," she said.
