Charter Review Commission Announced In Cleveland Heights

The commission could fundamentally change the city's government structure.

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OH β€” Changes to the city's charter, the guiding legal document for Cleveland Heights government, could be forthcoming. At Monday night's city council meeting, 15 members of the Charter Review Commission were announced.

"I want to thank all these individuals for their time and commitment to Cleveland Heights and its future," said Cleveland Heights Mayor Cheryl Stephens. "The work they are about to undertake can have a meaningful impact on our city for the long-term."

Review of the city's charter is mandated by the charter itself. However, the last time a review was convened was more than three decades ago, in 1982. The commission will be tasked with investigating issues to study, doing fact-finding, and then addressing said issues. The city said in a press release that such considerations could include, as examples only, term limits, anti-discrimination language and more.

Members of the commission were chosen from a pool of submitted applications. City council members then appointed one individual each. The final eight members of the council were appointed by the council as a whole.
