CHUH Schools Get "D" On Controversial State Report Cards

The Cleveland Heights-University Heights Schools got one "F" and two "D's" on the Ohio Department of Education report cards.

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OH β€” The Cleveland Heights-University Heights Schools got a "D" overall on the most recent iteration of the controversial Ohio schools report cards. The district had one "F" and two "D's" in the six key measuring areas.

The Ohio Department of Education's state report card system has been controversial since its inception. Many superintendents have criticized the shifting metrics that inform the grades, and the "over-simplification" of an education experience.

Earlier this month, the League of Women Voters hosted a panel discussing the strengths and weaknesses of the state report card system. CHUH Superintendent Talisa Dixon took part in the event and talked about the changes she'd like to see within the measuring system.

Dixon said the report card system should be relevant and accurate to community stakeholders. "If we think about the experiences that we want for our kids, and the experiences that parents want for their kids in the classroom, you don't get that from the report card. You get one day that you're asking kids to do a task and then you're getting data from that," she said.

She added that if standardized testing is going to be used as a tool of the state, it should be used to "monitor and diagnose." Some "other type of measure" should be used to then gauge the success of a school district, Dixon said.
