Police Shut Down MYXX For One Evening

Four police cars with lights flashing were parked outside of Sunday night. Officers were there to disperse and monitor the crowd after the police department shut down the establishment for the evening.

Police Chief Jeffrey Robertson said MYXX didn’t have a rental hall permit for a party they scheduled there June 24, so they closed the business for the night.

MYXX owner Kim Lisboa said the business is primarily a restaurant, bar and lounge, so she doesn’t need that type of permit.

“I had a birthday party there. There was no fee or charge, nothing. Anybody could have come in. We’re a restaurant and we serve food and drinks and have dancing. They said I was a party hall and had no permit, but that is not the case,” Lisboa said. “It was kind of a bogus claim. It was not warranted at all.”

She said she received no warning from the city.

Robertson said police found out about the event the day of.

“This past Sunday we had information about what was going on there. Sunday night they had a group coming in there that had apparently rented out the place starting at 10 at night on a Sunday,” he said. “We’re not going to allow that. They don’t have a permit for that reason. That’s not primarily a restaurant, that’s a rental hall.”

Robertson said he’s had complaints about the business from neighbors in the area. Some calls came in the after the bar closed when a fight broke out, a car struck an officer and 300 people spilled out into the Cedar Fairmount intersection. A few people complained about the noise Sunday as the crowd left. But there have been others.

“I’ve talked to residents in the area, particularly on Surrey Road, and they’re tired of the disturbances when people are coming and going,” he said. “I’ve received reports of males urinating on lawns of apartment buildings on Surrey and other noise disturbances. And they do come out of her building. You’re responsible for what goes on inside and outside of your establishment, and it’s disrupting the area.”

Lisboa said the incident on June 17 was outside of her business, and they’ve never had problems with fights or otherwise inside of MYXX.

“I wasn’t there (June 17) so I don’t know what exactly happened, but my employees said there were no incidents at all in our establishment, and I know when everyone was leaving they had six police cars there, probably causing panic,” she said.

She said the problems that evening weren’t her fault. For example, someone could leave any establishment in a car, hit something or someone, and the business wouldn’t be blamed, she said.

“I don’t like this negative publicity or rumors floating around,” she said. “We have our own security … we take means to make sure people are safe. We’ve never had a fight break out in there ever. It’s been a pretty decent, mellow, non-confrontational crowd.”
