Cleveland Heights Appoints Michael Ungar to City Council

The city appointed planning commission member and law firm partner Ungar to Council over nine other applicants.

Cleveland Heights announced the appointment of resident Michael Ungar to City Council Friday, filling the unexpired term of Councilman Jeff Coryell.

Ungar has served on the city’s planning commission since 1993, serving as chair for 16 years. He was a member of the Citizen Advisory Committee prior to that.

He is a partner in law firm Ulmer & Berne LLP., where he is Chair of the firm’s Litigation Department and a member of the Management Committee.

β€œOurs is a uniquely diverse and special community with plenty of challenges and opportunities to be addressed,” Ungar said in a press release. β€œI am excited about the future of our city and our new city leadership, and welcome the opportunity to become a member of that team.”

Ungar was selected from 10 applicants. Mayor Cheryl Stephens noted in the press release that choosing the appointee was a difficult decision. She also said that each applicant brought individual strengths but the Council ultimately decided to go with Ungar.

β€œMichael Ungar will bring solid experience and also a strong commitment to the community of Cleveland Heights and to our City Council,” Stephens said in the release. β€œWe all look forward to having him as a member of our Council.”

Ungar will be sworn in on April 18 at 7:30 p.m. during a regularly scheduled Council meeting.
