Cleveland Heights Offering Aid To Furloughed Workers

The city is rolling out a three-month payment plan, free of penalties, for utility bills.

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OH β€” To help furloughed federal government employees, Cleveland Heights officials are offering a three-month payment plan on local sewer and landfill utility bills. The plan will eliminate penalties on accruing balances.

The city said it wants to support workers during a difficult time. Officials believe this payment plan could help ease difficulties for those impacted by the government shutdown.

In that same spirit, the city is also offering its three-month payment plan to landlords who normally receive federal assistance, or receive rent from a furloughed worker.

"Therefore, landlords who have been impacted by the government shutdown will also be able to make payment arrangements on their local sewer and landfill bill for the affected rental unit," the city said in a statement.

The payment plan will continue to accrue normal balances for sewer and landfill services, but customers won't be penalized for deferred payments.

"To qualify, federal employees must live in the City of Cleveland Heights and provide a pay stub or federal employment identification badge. Landlords should provide proof of a federal subsidy for the unit for which they are seeking relief," the city said.
