Cleveland Heights, Solon Police React to Car Robberies, Give Tips to Protect Yourself

Criminals have been using "Bump and Grab" tactics to snatch cars.

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OH - A series of "Bump and Grab" robberies have hit Cleveland's eastern suburbs in recent weeks. During those incidents, a criminal will rear end your vehicle and when you get out to exchange information, they will steal your car, money, and personal property. Now local police departments are responding to the crisis by releasing tips on how people can protect themselves from this type of crime.

Cleveland Heights police released a statement saying the most important thing you can do to protect yourself is to drive extra cautiously and be alert at all times. Solon Police Lieutenant Bruce Felton adds that you should always leave space between the car in front of you. That's important because a variation of the typical "Bump and Grab" is that a criminal cuts you off and then slams on their brakes. If you can put about a car's length of space between you and the next vehicle, you may be able to dodge accidents like those used in these crimes.

If you do find yourself in an accident though, Cleveland Heights and Solon police have two options for you. First, pull your car into a public space (like a library or crowded shopping center) or drive to the nearest police station. Alternatively, you can lock your doors and windows, call police, and wait for officers to arrive and mediate the situation.

"Take note of the other car involved, the occupants, weapons, how quickly they exit their car and approach you, and, if you feel uncomfortable proceed to the closest police department of fire department," Felton said in a statement.

Cleveland Heights police add that if you're afraid someone is following you on the road, head to your closest police department or a crowded, well-lit area (again, think of a busy shopping center parking lot).

Some of these crimes have taken place in parking lots. Police are saying that when you're entering or leaving a parking area, be cognizant of your surroundings. Try to park someplace well-lit. Have your keys ready when you're returning to your car and make sure no one is hanging around your car. If someone is hanging around your vehicle, walk to the nearest open store and call police.

Police also say that you should lock your doors and roll your windows up when you're driving on side streets and local roadways. That's especially true at night.

Finally, if none of that works and you end up in a robbery scenario, don't be a hero.

"If you do find yourself at a disadvantage, please give up the car; no property is worth sacrificing your safety for!" Felton said.
