Construction Workers Hit By Driver On Cedar Road

A hit-and-run driver hit two construction workers on early Thursday morning. Both workers are in critical condition.

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OH β€” Two construction workers were hit by a car on early Thursday morning. They are both in critical condition, according to University Heights Police.

Police said the two workers were hit while working on Cedar Road at approximately 3 a.m. The vehicle that hit them did not stop at the scene, according to police.

The vehicle continued into Gates Mills and onto SOM Center Road. The car was finally stopped when it hit a utility pole near Gilmour Academy. The car snapped the pole in half. The driver was pulled from the vehicle by emergency crews and rushed to a hospital. The driver is in critical condition at Hillcrest Hospital.

The driver was a 64-year-old man from Richfield, Ohio. Charges have not yet been brought against the driver, police said.

The two injured workers are a 46-year-old man from Elyria and a 54-year-old man from Rocky River. Both workers are employed by TraffTech. They were preparing the construction zone on Cedar Road at the time of the accident.

Investigators are still looking into the accident, police said.

The incident closed Cedar Road for hours on Thursday morning.

Construction on Cedar was slated to start in earnest on Thursday. Police departments in both Beachwood and University Heights warned drivers of the impending work and asked motorists to approach the area with extra caution.

University Heights Police issued a warning to drivers before construction started, saying workers would "prefer to not be struck by a vehicle." The department again took to social media after the accident, asking drivers to "Please, please, please drive with caution..."
