Heights High Design Firm Wins Engineering Award

The renovated school re-opened in August. The firm that handled the re-designs has taken home an award for their labor.

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OH — The design firm that worked on Heights High has had its work honored with an Outstanding Achievement Award for its work on the school. The designation was presented as part of the 2018 Engineering Excellence Awards Competition.

“Heights High School is a tremendous facility,” said Brian David, PE, principal and senior vice president of Karpinski Engineering. “The community cared deeply about what their new school would be like, and I’m proud of what our team accomplished for the community and its students.”

The firm's design focused on preserving the original, 1926 building while creating new areas around it. The 134,000 square foot original building is now flanked by 216,000-square feet of new construction.

The school district said that another focus of the redesign was sustainability. The new facility reduces the building's energy use by 60 percent and utility costs by 32 percent. The building is also on track for LEED Gold Certification.

One of the key features touted by the Cleveland Heights-University Heights School District is the hybrid geothermal system. That system basically deploys the earth's natural properties to provide heating and cooling to the building.
