Integration of Cleveland Heights
Tuesday, Oct. 21st at 7 p.m., at the Lee Road Branch of Heights Libraries
Back by popular request! CSU associate professor of history, Mark Souther, and historian and long-time resident of Cleveland Heights, Susie Kaeser, will share the history of the city’s integration using historical images and oral histories. Following an brief overview of the impact of the Great Migration, slum clearance, public housing, racial transition, urban renewal, struggles for school and housing integration in the City of Cleveland, the presenters will focus on the role of citizen activists in Cleveland Heights, whose efforts proved that re-segregation, disinvestment, and white flight were anything but inevitable--and recast Cleveland Heights as a national model for stable integration. Presented in partnership with Cleveland Heights Historical Society and Cleveland Heights Landmark Commission.
