Labor Day 2018: What's Open, What's Closed In Cleveland Heights

Trash and recycling will be delayed and most city facilities will be shut down.

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OH β€” Labor Day will be recognized Monday, which means several municipal facilities will be closed. Trash collection and a city council meeting will also be delayed by the holiday.

Cleveland Heights city offices, the community center and the Cleveland Heights Municipal Court will all be closed on Monday. The regularly scheduled city council meeting, which would normally take place September 3, will be moved to Tuesday, September 4. Heights Libraries and the CHUH Schools will also be closed Monday.

Trash and recycling will also be impacted by Labor Day, with collection delayed one day. Here's the schedule for collection that week:

  • Monday collection will be on Tuesday
  • Tuesday collection will be on Wednesday
  • Wednesday collection will be on Thursday
  • Thursday collection will be on Friday
  • Friday collection will be on Saturday

For the historians out there (or the plain curious), the first Labor Day holiday was Tuesday, September 5, 1882. New York's labor unions led the charge to have a holiday. The New York Tribune reported that, "The windows and roofs and even the lamp posts and awning frames were occupied by persons anxious to get a good view of the first parade in New York of workingmen of all trades united in one organization."
