National Award Given To 2 Cleveland Heights Schools

Canterbury Elementary and Heights Middle School have both been recognized as National PTA Schools of Excellence.

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OH — Two Cleveland Heights-University Heights School District buildings have earned the National PTA School of Excellence award: Canterbury Elementary and Heights Middle School.

"All of our schools should be commended for their efforts to enroll in the program and make the commitment to increase building-wide support of school improvement. PTA leaders were the ambassadors of the program which increases the building-level support; they led the way to help strengthen family-school partnerships," said Lisa Hunt, the district's family engagement specialist.

The awards are given to schools based on their ability to implement school improvement programs over a yearlong time frame, and the overall well-being of students and the school community. Only 278 schools and PTAs, nationwide, received the two-year designation this year.

To qualify for the award, the schools had to enroll in the program, perform a survey, download and interpret the data, then create an action plan that would boost school processes. Their plans then had to be submitted to the National PTA for review.

Both Canterbury and Height Middle schools will receive a banner celebrating their achievement, the school district said.
