An Octoroon Opens at Cleveland Heights' Dobama Theater

The New York Times has called the play the "decade's most eloquent theatrical statement on race in America."

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OH - An Octoroon, a modern update on the 1859 play 'The Octoroon', will open Oct. 21 at Dobama Theatre in Cleveland Heights. The show held a special preview performance on Oct. 20.

According to the Dobama Theater website, in 1859 Dion Boucicault's play 'The Octoroon' helped spark national debate around the abolition of slavery and the role of political theater. Using Boucicault’s plot as a template, playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ 'An Octoroon' deconstructs and critiques its depiction of race and confronts the issues facing modern day America.

Jenkins won a MacArthur Genius Grant following the production of his play and the play won a 2014 Obie Award for Best New Play.
