Stabbed, Beaten Woman Rescued From Fire In University Heights

Police said a woman was assaulted in her apartment on Friday. Her attacker then tried to set the woman's apartment ablaze, police said.

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OH β€” An unconscious and bloody woman was rescued from a fire at an apartment in University Heights on Friday, police said. Investigators believe the woman was attacked before the fire broke out.

On Friday, callers reported a fire at an apartment on Kerwin Road. Police and fire personnel went to the apartment and saw evidence of a recent fire. The sprinkler system in the apartment was still active, police said.

Firefighters found a 23-year-old woman inside the apartment. She was unresponsive and had numerous cuts and stab wounds to her body, police said. Firefighters gave her first aid until she could be taken to a nearby hospital. She has since been stabilized.

Investigation into the fire and the woman's attack are ongoing. However, a 37-year-old woman has been taken into custody and could face charges for attempted murder, aggravated arson and tampering with evidence.

Police said the 37-year-old may have attacked the other woman and then tried to set fire to the apartment before leaving. Investigators have not released the identity of the suspect.
