Super Bowl Winner Honored At John Carroll Game

London Fletcher was the leading tackler for Super Bowl XXXIV winners the St. Louis Rams. He's also a John Carroll alum.

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OH β€” At halftime of an instant classic football game between rivals John Carroll University and Mount Union, retired NFL linebacker London Fletcher, a JCU-alum, was honored at Don Shula Field. A framed jersey, bearing number 3, was gifted to the Cleveland-native. Fletcher was a two-time All-American during his career as a Blue Streak.

Fletcher is one of the more famous players to graduate from the Jesuit college in University Heights. He racked up an impressive 202 tackles during his senior season and was named the "1997 Football Gazette Division II Linebacker of the Year."

Fletcher was also part of one of the most legendary and successful football teams in school history. In fact, on Saturday, other members of Fletcher's 1997 John Carroll University football team joined him on the field to be honored as the first team in school history to win an NCAA Division III postseason contest.

Fletcher left John Carroll and went to the NFL in 1998. He enjoyed a 16-year career, retiring in 2013. He played for three different teams during his professional tenure, St. Louis, Buffalo and Washington. He helped lead the Rams to a victory in Super Bowl XXXIV.

He was the Rams leading tackler in the 1999-2000 season, when the squad defeated the Tennessee Titans in a classic Super Bowl match-up.

Plus, Fletcher is one of only four players in the history of the NFL to play 250 consecutive games. Despite being a linebacker, a hard-hitting position, he didn't miss a single game in his career.

Fletcher also earned a reputation in the NFL as a committed community man. He won the Redskins' Walter Payton Man of the Year award in 2008 and 2009. In 2012, he also won the Bart Starr Award, which recognizes one NFL player for outstanding character and leadership in the home, on the field and in the community.

Fletcher also established the London's Bridge Foundations, which helps promote positive youth development with a focus on academics, leadership and community involvement.

Sadly, John Carroll lost to undefeated Mount Union, 31-27, Saturday.
