Suspected Fireworks Prompt Calls To Cleveland Heights Police

Police Chief Annette Mecklenburg said callers reported hearing possible gunshots on Tuesday, but the sounds likely came from fireworks.

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OH β€” Multiple people reported hearing loud pops on Tuesday afternoon. The callers told police the sounds may have been gunshots fired on the west side of Cleveland Heights.

Police Chief Annette Mecklenburg addressed the concerns on social media, saying the noises appear to have come from fireworks. The sounds were reported on Edgehill, Washington, Lancashire, and other areas.

Officers searched the area after the calls came in. Witnesses said they saw fireworks going off at Coventry and Mayfield, which may have caused the loud noise.

"At this time we believe that these fireworks are the source of the noise that many people heard as some fireworks sound very similar to gunshots," Mecklenburg said.
