CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OH — Two children are dead after an apparent hammock accident in Cleveland Heights, police announced.

On Sunday evening, two girls were lounging in a hammock. The hammock was tied to a tree and a brick pillar, according to Cleveland Heights Police Chief Annette Mecklenburg. The pillar may have collapsed and fallen on the girls, police said.

Emergency services rushed to the home. Crews removed the pillar and pulled the girls from beneath the rubble. The girls were treated by EMS and rushed to a nearby hospital.

The two girls died at the hospital, police said. They were ages 12 and 14, Mecklenburg said.

Police are still investigating the deaths.
