In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as National Police Week. This week, as we honor our Cleveland Heights Police force, I hope you will join me in acknowledging their exceptional work, as well as recognizing and remembering our fallen officers and K-9s, and their families.

Cleveland Heights and a number of our neighboring cities made the tough call on May 14 to cancel all summer programs. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) still advises that the best way to reduce the spread of the coronavirus is limiting face-to-face contact with others including keeping a minimum of 6 feet of distance from other people and avoiding gathering in groups of any size outside of your household. The anti-gathering protocols apply even when social distancing is possible. There are additional cleaning and sanitizing protocols that would also need to be followed. The City gave careful consideration to our ability to implement all of the necessary CDC protocols to keep people safe and determined it would be very difficult to do so. The health and safety of the community is our main objective.

A fun way to support our local businesses launches today with Shop Local Bingo. Each week, for the next five weeks, a new Bingo card will be added featuring 24 local businesses. Every Bingo you submit will be entered in a weekly drawing to receive a Cleveland Heights dinner/dessert/beverage/groceries/gift experience on us – a $50 value for your choice of featured business – two $25 gift cards. This year’s “We Are Noble” community celebration by Noble Neighbors will take place May 15-17 but with some adjustments due to COVID-19. Instead of gathering at yard sales, institution-sponsored events and parks, the festivities will take place on the streets.

“Show, Support, Serve and Savor” are the themes for this year’s event. Show: Residents are encouraged to “display your celebration and thanks at your home” using signs, flags, banners, sculptures, balloons or lights. Support: Donations of hygiene items (including diapers), cleaning supplies and disposable products are being sought, especially from 10am to noon on Saturday, May 16 at the Start Right Church Food Pantry (977 Caledonia Avenue on the Winsford Road side of the building). Serve: Residents are encouraged to choose a block or two to pick up litter in their neighborhood. Savor: Take a walk or drive around the neighborhood and enjoy the displays of celebration and gratitude.

We’re looking forward to a partial reopening of the Heights Libraries. Beginning May 18, the Lee Road branch will offer curbside pick-ups for items on hold, phone assistance, and home-bound delivery. Library staff will be getting the buildings ready for a partial reopening that will allow a limited number of customers to access services in the lobbies - new hold pick-ups, obtaining tax forms, and using copier and fax machines. Lobby service begins June 2 at the Lee Road branch and June 9 at Coventry, Noble and University Heights branches. The lobbies will be open Tuesday and Thursday from 1 to 9pm; Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10am to 5pm; Senior-only hours are from 10am to 12 noon on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Customers must wear face masks to gain entry into the buildings. Please check their website for all the details.
