📰 News we're reading

1. Police, leaders speak on 'staggering' domestic violence rates, goal to decrease them (nbc4i.com) — Columbus police say more than 15,000 domestic violence calls have already come into their emergency line this year, with many involving shootings or stabbings. Local law enforcement and advocates describe rising demand for shelters and stress that community members must report concerns early, as roughly a third of recent homicides in the city are domestic-related.

2. Ginther, Hardin spar over storm repairs as 2027 Columbus mayoral race takes shape (abc6onyourside.com) — A fight over repairing the storm-damaged Barack Community Center is sharpening tensions between Mayor Andrew Ginther and City Council President Shannon Hardin as Columbus' 2027 mayoral race begins to take shape. Their clash over storm funding, capital projects, and a budget shortfall could influence how neighborhoods see city spending and may even open the door for another candidate to jump in.

3. FEMA and Ohio EMA open Disaster Recovery Centers for additional relief (nbc4i.com) — Columbus and Franklin County residents hit by August storms can now get in-person help at a new FEMA Disaster Recovery Center at Reynoldsburg Community Church. Staff there can guide you through applications for federal aid and Small Business Administration disaster loans to cover uninsured or underinsured damage. Bring photos or documentation of losses, and you can return later to check your application status.

4. Columbus College of Art & Design unveils Center for Creative Collaboration (dispatch.com) — A major new creative hub has opened at Columbus College of Art & Design, offering 27,000 square feet of studios, labs, and collaboration space overlooking the Columbus Museum of Art. Students, faculty, local businesses, and community partners can now work together in fabrication shops, classrooms, and outdoor areas designed to support hands-on projects and partnerships across Columbus.

5. Investing in the Future of Lifesaving Blood Services in Central Ohio (redcross.org) — Major upgrades at the Columbus Blood Manufacturing Laboratory are modernizing coolers, freezers and testing equipment that handle more than half a million blood products a year. These donor-funded improvements strengthen central Ohio's role in the national blood supply, helping local hospitals and patients rely on safer, more efficient storage and testing when blood is urgently needed.
