📰 News we're reading

1. Stretch of Kirtland-Chardon Road to close for repaving project (news-herald.com) — Drivers in Kirtland should prepare for Kirtland-Chardon Road to close for about 45 days starting Oct. 5 between Sperry and Wisner, with Sperry Road serving as the main detour. City officials say the $500,000-plus project will repave the roadway and replace curbs and gutters, funded largely through federal and state transportation grants, while keeping emergency access open.

2. CVC Players of the Week: Sept. 21-27, 2026 (chagrinvalleyconference.com) — Kirtland sports fans can celebrate junior runner Anna Hill, who led Kirtland to a team cross country title at the Cardinal Invitational and moved into the program’s all‑time top 20. She’s one of several Chagrin Valley Conference athletes honored this week for standout performances in football, golf, soccer, volleyball, tennis, and more across the region.

3. Kirtland's giant arboretum has ravines, ancient trees, and a walk through the sky (wheninyourstate.com) — Holden Arboretum in Kirtland offers residents 3,500 acres of trails, ravines, and towering forest views just minutes from home. From the 500-foot Murch Canopy Walk and 120-foot Emergent Tower to old-growth beech stands, birding hotspots, and seasonal wildflower and rhododendron gardens, it’s a year‑round place to hike, explore, and see Northeast Ohio’s forests in every season.

4. American beech trees may carry genetic resistance to deadly leaf disease (phys.org) — Researchers working at Holden Arboretum in Kirtland have confirmed that some American beech trees show genetic resistance to beech leaf disease, a problem that has killed many trees in northeastern Ohio forests. By testing trees grown on the Kirtland grounds and nearby areas, scientists hope to build breeding programs and treatments that could protect local beech‑maple forests and the wildlife that depend on them.
