COVID-19 Reminds Us of Importance of Schools & Community
Lakewood Board of Education member Michael Callahan acknowledges the work of school district and community, and urges support of Issue 28.

The COVID-19 situation has upended many aspects of daily life. Many of us have seen roles, priorities, and/or routines change significantly. In my day job as a parks and recreation professional, my core responsibilities have changed from a program and facility manager to more of a social service manager, ensuring that the most vulnerable have their essential needs met. On a more personal note, I have not seen my father, a memory care facility resident, in over a month (except for video conferencing). I am very concerned about his well-being and many other vulnerable people. Most of us have similar personal examples of how this situation has affected us.
As a school board member and parent of children in our schools I have seen our school district respond to the pandemic in many ways. The Lakewood City Schools responded quickly and fluidly to ensure the most basic needs of families are met in terms of continuing the food service program, and from there to ensure that the education process continues. The district developed a sixty day plan based on the following core goals: provide a safe and secure environment; provide a high-quality, student-centered remote learning experience; engage and provide support for staff, monitor and maintain fiscal responsibility; to be as flexible and adaptable as possible; and to cooperate and coordinate with all community organizations. I am proud of our district leadership, faculty and staff for their commitment to these goals and the community. I have seen firsthand teachers adapt to this situation and engage and inspire students in new ways. I have seen coaches remain in contact with students and motivate them to stay committed to their craft. I continue to see examples of selfless actions for the betterment of others.
As a Lakewood resident and Ohioan, I am amazed by the response of our local community and our entire state as well. Lakewood and Ohio have collectively taken the situation seriously and worked very hard to continue core services that will allow us to weather the storm of the pandemic and to resume normal activities as soon as is safe.
