Lakewood High Has 3 National Merit Commended Scholars

The trio join Lakewood's two National Merit Semifinalists.

LAKEWOOD, OH — Three Lakewood High students have been named National Merit Commended Students. Emma Carson, Emma Hirsch and Alexander Weber achieved an elite group of students that demonstrated academic potential.

National Merit Commended Students represent the top 5 percent of performers on the PSAT. More than 1.6 million students take the PSAT every year.

Carson is a member of the National Honor Society, the Lakewood Project and the Four Seasons String Quartet. She is a violinist in the Contemporary Youth Orchestra and part of this year's Northeast Ohio Regional Orchestra. Over the summer, she spent six weeks at Interlochen Arts Camp. She plans to attend college and major in music education.

Hirsch is a member of the varsity girls soccer team, a member of National Honor Society and part of the Symphonic Orchestra. She is president of Lakewood High's National Honor Society and captain of the soccer team. She plans to attend college and major in psychology and human development.

Weber is planning to get a degree in either computer science or computer engineering. He completed the Tri-C Certificate in mobile programming at 14, making him the youngest person to walk across the commencement stage. He was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa. He also completed the CISCO CCNA program through West Shore Career-Tech Center and is spending his mornings at Cleveland State through the College Credit Plus program.

The three students join Lakewood's two National Merit Semifinalists, Evan Bell and Aidan Bohac. Bell and Bohac will have a chance to compete for scholarships.
